Create Sharepoint Windows Explorer Shortcut for Office 365

Here are steps we follow to set up a shortcut for Sharepoint on a Windows PC.

Part 1 – Prep Internet Explorer

  1. Go to Control Panel > Internet Options
  2. Click into the Connections tab
  3. Click “LAN Settings” button
  4. Untick “Automatically detect settings”
  5. Click OK twice
  6. Close Control Panel

Part 2 – Prep Internet Explorer Security Settings

  1. Go to Control Panel > Internet Options
  2. Click the Security tab, click the Trusted sites zone, and then click Sites.
  3. Verify that the following entries are listed in the Websites list:
https://*.outlook.com
https://*.sharepoint.com
https://*.microsoftonline.com
https://*.lync.com

If these entries are not present, add them to the Trusted sites list of websites.

  1. Click the Local intranet zone, click Sites, and then click Advanced.
  2. Verify that the following entries are listed in the Websites list:
*.microsoftonline.com
*.sharepoint.com
*.outlook.com
*.lync.com

If these entries are not present, add them to the Local intranet zone list of websites.

Part 3 – Sign into the Cloud

  1. Using Internet Explorer (Important!), go to http://portal.microsoftonline.com/
  2. SUPER important: Make sure “Keep me signed in” is ticked.
  3. Sign in using your Office 365 email address and password

Part 4 – Sign into Sharepoint (similar steps as above)

  1. Using Internet Explorer (Important!), go to your SharePoint site (ie https://<yoursitename>.sharepoint.com/)
  2. SUPER important: Make sure “Keep me signed in” is ticked.
  3. Sign in using your cloud email address and password

Part 5 – Create a mapping on the computer

  1. Click “Start” and Right-Click “Computer”
  2. From the popup menu pick “Map Network Drive”
  3. Click the link at the bottom that starts with “Connect to a Web site that you can….”
  4. Click Next
  5. Click “Choose a custom network location” and click Next
  6. Type your sharepoint address: https://<yoursitename>.sharepoint.com/ (note: it’s critical to have the ending / in the address)
  7. Click “Next”
  8. You will be prompted for a name. You can change it to “Company Sharepoint” or something similar (or leave it as the default name) then click Next
  9. Click “Finish”
  10. You will see the core Sharepoint folder appear.
