Ukrainian Phonetic Keyboard Layout on Windows Vista/7/8/8.1/10

Posted by: Michael Yereniuk on 3/23/2017

I've had a number of requests on how to set up a phonetic keyboard layout for the Ukrainian language feature in Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, and 10

The Ukrainian keyboard layout that ships with Microsoft Windows is the standard layout used in Ukraine, but this is a confusing layout for users used to the layout of a QWERTY keyboard.

We created a phonetic layout addition for Windows that makes sense, at least to us. Feel free to offer up suggestions in the comments and we can adjust the layout if a more logical layout can be determined.

Note: the instructions (and screenshots) below are for Windows Vista, but this procedure will work for Windows 7.

Instructions for installing a Ukrainian Phonetic Language Keyboard on Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, and Windows 10.

1. Download and run the Chickenlip Ukrainian Keyboard Layout installer.

2. Once running, you'll see a window asking about where to extract the setup files. You can override this option, but for most users the default will be fine. Click the "Unzip" button to continue.

3. The set up process will start. You will need to Allow the program to run. Watch for a flashing box near the bottom of the screen if the notification does not come up automatically. Click the "Allow" option to continue.

4. Once the installation has finished, click the "Close" button.

5. Then click the "Close" button on the unzip window.

6. Check the Language settings by opening Control Panel (Click the Windows Orb and select "Control Panel")

7. Click on the "Change keyboards or other input methods" option under "Clock, Language, and Region" OR "Regional and Language Options" (depending on which Control Panel view is enabled on your computer).

8. Click the "Change keyboards..." button to view the installed keyboard list.

9. The list of installed keyboards looks like this:

10. If the Ukrainian (Chickenlip VX) keyboard is listed, then skip to step 10. Otherwise, click the "Add" button to find the language and keyboard in the list. Put a checkmark next to Ukrainian (Chickenlip VX) and click the "OK" button.

11. By this point, you should see something similar to the following picture. If so, click the "OK" button to activate the changes. You can also remove items from this list by highlighting them and clicking the "Remove" button (for example, you can remove other Ukrainian keyboard layouts or if you do not have a tablet PC, you can remove the handwriting recognition or ink correction options).

12. You can now change languages by clicking the language toolbar at the bottom of the screen and selecting the appropriate language. (Power Tip: Press the Left Alt and Left Shift keys together to flip between languages).

And that's it! Let me know if you have any questions in the comments section.
